Create Striking Home Designs That Showcase Your Impressionist Prints

    By Sarah Murphy

Not everyone is a natural designer with lots of creativity and a flair for color. Some people stick with neutral shades and conventional furnishings because they are safe and don't show the dirt. Others are interested in creating an interesting living space, but don't quite know how to go about it. For these individuals, some experts suggest finding wall art, like impressionist prints, and building your room around it.

Most people have certain colors and styles they prefer over others. Before you go out and spend money on a expensive print, you should give some thought to the furniture you already have and the wall coverings already in place. Of course, you can go out and buy all new furnishings, carpets and rugs, and repaint or wallpaper, but that may not economically feasible for most. Everything doesn't have to be done at one time.

Since you have already closely examined your preferred color schemes, you will be able to choose artwork that complements it. Trying to match colors exactly is very difficult and not really your goal anyway. What you need to look for are paintings that are similar in hue and tone with what you already have.

If you are unfamiliar with the Impressionists for example, you can look at different examples of various artists who exemplify the genre. Monet's work is very different from Gauguin's. You might find you like both of them, neither one, or prefer Gauguin's post-Impressionist sunflowers to Monet's water lilies. The feel and design of your room will be very different depending on which artist's work you decide to purchase and hang.

You can't just hammer nails into walls and hang artworks anywhere in the room. It may be best to remove all the furniture and really look at the configuration and size of the living space empty. This may give you a better idea about whether you need horizontal or vertical focal points on the walls. If your room has an interesting fireplace or mantel, you might hang an appropriately sized print above it to draw your guests eyes to it.

Many artists had strong political opinions and personal preferences when it came to subject matter. If you find a work that is compatible with something you feel strongly about, the work will be much more than decorative. Feminists might choose to showcase only works by women Impressionists like Mary Cassatt. A ballerina study by Degas could be the preference for someone who is a patron of a local ballet company.

If you live by yourself, you can choose any kind of art you like to hang on the walls. Individuals who share space with a partner and larger family should really take everyone's taste into consideration when choosing artwork and the accompanying room design. Modernism is not to everyone's liking any more than Victorian is.

A lot of Impressionist work is immediately recognizable and easy to incorporate into an overall room design. The colors, textures, and subject matter you choose depend on your taste and style. You don't have to be a professional to create a compelling and inviting space.
